On board a barge, at least two breathing air carriers (compressed air carriers) are ready for use at any time as soon as passengers are on board. The breathing air carriers are equipped with independent respiratory protection and firefighter clothing. The task of this team is to carry out the evacuation during a fire on board, in areas where smoke is present. Once this task has been completed, the team can be deployed for a targeted rescue or to supervise the fire department when it comes on board.
Basic training/12 teaching hours
This training is intended for staff responsible for evacuating and rescuing passengers during a fire on board.
During the basic Breathing Air course, the candidate learns how to deal with the material and procedures during breathing air deployment.
The course takes 12 hours of lessons where, in addition to a short theory session, participants are mainly taught in a practical way how to use the breathing equipment and procedures to be able to use them safely.
Refresher course/8 hours
After completing the basic course, it is legally required to repeat the skills once a year by following 8 hours of training.
During the refresher training, you will only practice in a practical way. By using the different spaces and objects in the ship, real situations are simulated. This gives the breathing air carriers a good knowledge of the ship and emergencies that may occur.
